Defense Center Removal Instructions

Defense Center is a rogue anti-spyware application related to the well-known Protection Center. Emulating its relative, Defense Center tries to trick unwary users into paying for a software license. This fake malware reaches user systems via malicious websites which promote fake online scanners and video codec packs. Once the user visits one of these websites, a Trojan will get downloaded on to the system and install Defense Center. Once installed, Defense Center floods the user with an endless stream of fake virus scans, which return results claiming that the computer is heavily infected with malware. Furthermore, Defense Center generates a large number of fake security warning pop-ups from the Windows Taskbar. These warnings combine together to urge the user to purchase the ‘full’ version of Defense Center, through the claim that the currently installed ‘trial’ version is not capable of properly cleaning the system. However, it should be kept in mind that Defense Center is merely a fake application which cannot do anything to scan or clean your computer.

It is extremely important to initiate removal as soon as you find any signs of it being installed on your computer. In order to remove properly, it is needed to stop its processes, unregister its DLLs, delete its files and folders and remove its registry entries.

Defence Center Manual Removal Procedures

The first step you must take in order to remove Defense Center is to stop the following processes:

  • mswinsck.exe
  • wscsvc32.exe
  • defcnt.exe
  • uninstall.exe

Next, it is necessary to unregister the following DLL files:

  • fiosejgfse.dll
  • defext.dll
  • defhook.dll

The next step in Defense Center removal is the deletion of the following files and folders:

  • %documents and settings%\all users\application data\fiosejgfse.dll
  • %temp%\mswinsck.exe
  • %temp%\wscsvc32.exe
  • %appdata%\microsoft\internet explorer\quick launch\Defense Center.lnk
  • %desktop%\Defense Center support.lnk
  • %desktop%\Defense Center.lnk
  • %commonprograms%\Defense Center\about.lnk
  • %programfiles\Defense Center\about.ico

Defence Center Registry Removal Procedures

Removing files and folders alone is not sufficient for complete Defense Center removal. In order to remove Defense Center completely, the following keys and settings should be removed from the Windows Registry:

  • hkcr\CLSID\{5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000}
  • hklm\SOFTWARE\Defense Center
  • hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\Defense Center
  • hklm\SOFTWARE\Paladin Antivirus
  • hkcu\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run “Defense Center”
  • hklm\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Shell Extensions\Approved “{5E2121EE-0300-11D4-8D3B-444553540000}”

Now it is safe to say that your computer is completely safe from Defense Center.  You still need to run a full security scan using Spyware Doctor with Antivirus to ensure you have gotten all traces and to make sure you do not have any secondary viruses on your computer.
