Defence Lab is a rogue anti-malware application that also passes under the name of DefenceLab Removal Tools. It is a fake application that attempts to trick users into purchasing its license by scaring them with false security warnings. Defence Lab’s main method of tricking users into installing it is to pretend that it is one of the top downloads at CNET’s Download.com. It may also enter the user’s system by piggybacking a Trojan installer along with fake video codecs that the user is asked to download. Once installed, Defence Lab swamps the user with fake security warnings, loading itself at startup and performing fake scans on the system every few minutes. Endless fake security pop-ups are also shown from the Windows Taskbar. During this general scare-assault on the user’s mentality, Defence Lab repeatedly requests the user to purchase a license to the ‘full’ version of the software, claiming that the currently installed ‘trial’ version is not up to the task of properly cleaning the detected ‘threats’. However, it is important to keep in mind that Defence Lab is simply a fake application that cannot properly scan or clean any system no matter which version is installed.
